Federico Martinotti

In the late 19th century, in the Asti province (Piedmont region), Italians were presented with a sparkling wine that was produced according to a new method, which was invented by the famous Italian enologist Federico Martinotti.

The wine appeared to have such a wonderful aroma, incredible sweetness, and soft perlage that it instantly won the hearts of the high society of those times.

Several bottles of that wine were served at the reception of the Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich, the son of Emperor Alexander II of Russia, which took place in Naples. The Duke was so charmed by the beverage that he ordered a batch of it to be delivered to his residence outside Moscow, Ilyinskoye, right away.

The Grand Duke’s order entailed the creation of a unique cuvee in 1899, the name for which was invented by Sergei Alexandrovich himself – “Moskva Zlatoglavaya” (“The Gold-Domed Moscow”).

Having returned to Russia, Sergei Alexandrovich, who at that time was a Moscow Governor General, invited Italian specialists to teach the production technique and start producing the sparkling wine “Moskva Zlatoglavaya” in Russia.

Unfortunately, however, his plans were never implemented because of the tragic events that took place in 1905 in Russia.
